Bootleg Records Part 1

What are they? And are they worth spending money on?

This should be split into two sections, counterfeit re presses and bootlegs, let's start with the counterfeits.

These are normal releases like led Zeppelin 1 but pressed on coloured vinyl, sound and pressing quality varies depending on who has released it (illegally). In the last couple of years there has been a huge increase in the availablity of these with ebay being at the forefront, though i have also found them in legitimate record stores.

They are usually limited editions of up to 500.

I suspect a blind eye is being turned to these at present by the record companies as the seem to be helping to drive the vinyl revival. They are mostly coming out of Europe where the copyright laws are different, no matter which way you look at it, at some point the shit is going to hit the fan.

Personally I rarely buy these, unless it's a record that was previously not available on vinyl or it is a particularly spectacular coloured vinyl.

Next time - bootlegs.
